The history of Nashville goes back to 1779, with the establishment of a stockade called Fort Nashborough. The settlement was named after a Revolutionary War brigadier general named Francis Nash. Thanks to its strategic location on the Cumberland River, Nashville quickly became a regional commerce hub. The city was formally incorporated in 1806, and became the capital of Tennessee in 1843.
Today, Nashville is home to more than 630,000 people, making it the second largest city in Tennessee and the fifth largest city in the American Southeast. Nashville has excellent healthcare facilities and universities, but it is best known for its music. "Music City," is home to many iconic places in the world of music, including the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the Grand Ole Opry.
